The Art of Doing More

Ruthie Holloway, Creative Director, modern art company Beautiful Crime

Thursday marks the opening of a new contemporary art exhibition we’ve been collaborating on with Microsoft – ‘The Art of Doing More’. It’s inspired by the Surface 3’s ability to empower people to do and achieve more and 11 exhibiting artists have spent weeks creating works using the Surface 3 to produce 101 new pieces of art.

Working for a modern and contemporary art company, I get so excited to see developments and trends in the way artists interact with different mediums and create their pieces. Technology is everywhere in our lives today, it’s so pervasive it’s only natural that it invades the art sphere too. The creation of art using technology is driving the formation of one of the most interesting genres within art because it is developing, like technology, at such a rapid speed.

There are ever increasing possibilities with technology, from the futuristic use of holograms to the more accessible use of tablets, phones and laptops. It is almost working as a leveller – no longer are people intimidated by a lack of training or talent, because the use of technology means that anyone can experiment and get involved.

Beautiful Crime has been blown away by what these artists have managed to create and how much they have breathed new life into their signature styles.

Exhibiting contemporary artists include the likes of D*Face, Carne Griffiths, Chuck Elliott, Pam Glew and Saroj Patel. They have different and varied styles using a variety of mediums from painting and photography to the use of tea and ink. Where once taking a pen to paper or a paintbrush to canvas seemed the obvious choice, the Surface has offered them a new tool, allowing them to take their art to a different level.
