Chelsea ‘will fail to qualify for Champions League despite beating Newcastle’
Chelsea will fail to qualify for the Champions League despite ending the Premier League season on a high by beating Newcastle, Bing has predicted.
Antonio Conte’s men, who are currently in fifth, have a 76% chance of victory at St James’ Park, according to Microsoft’s search engine, but will be unable to close the gap on the top four.
The four teams with the most points at the end of the season qualify for Europe’s top competition, with those in fifth and sixth handed a place in the Europa League.
Conte, who won the league with Chelsea last season, said he was focused on winning the final game.
“The situation is not in our hands,” he told the BBC. “Liverpool have to win the last game against Brighton and it’s the same for Tottenham. The only way to put a bit of pressure is this, to get three points in every game. In the last month we did this. We won three games away, Southampton, Burnley and Swansea, and one game at home against Liverpool. We’re doing our job in the best way to put pressure on Tottenham and Liverpool.”
Bing believes Liverpool have an 89% chance of beating Brighton at Anfield, while Spurs have a 50% chance of taking three points at home to Leicester.
That will mean Liverpool will end the season in third, Spurs in fourth and Chelsea in fifth.
Manchester United with finish in second, beating Watford (89% chance) on Sunday. Manchester City have already been crowned Premier League Champions and will close their campaign with victory at Southampton (76% chance).
Arsenal have a 36% chance of beating Huddersfield in Arsene Wenger’s final game in charge of the Gunners. The team will finish sixth, qualifying for the Europa League next season.
At the other end of the table, Stoke and West Brom have already been relegated to the Championship, with Swansea on the brink.
The Potters will end the season in last place after slumping to defeat against Swansea on Sunday – the Welsh club have a 38% chance of victory – while West Brom will lose against Crystal Palace – 50% chance of victory.
Elsewhere, Burnley have a 37% chance of beating Bournemouth, while there is a 35% chance of the West Ham and Everton match ending in a draw.
Bing creates its predictions using a complex algorithm that analyses player performance.
