Sea of Thieves notches up 10 million players, Rare reveals
More than 10 million people have played Sea of Thieves since its launch, the game’s creator has revealed.
To mark reaching the impressive milestone, Rare Studios is giving fans of the popular shared-world adventure title a free custom sail and a special new emote.
Joe Neate, Executive Producer at Rare, wrote in a blog post: “We’re excited and humbled to share that Sea of Thieves has now been played by more than 10 million players, reinforcing its status as the most successful new IP from Xbox this generation.
“It’s mind-blowing to think of that many people setting sail on the Sea of Thieves, and it’s all been made possible by the support and passion of our fantastic community.”
The news comes as Rare prepares to release the latest update for Sea of Thieves – called Legends of the Seas – which will “celebrate our community and its stories”, Neate added. It will be launched on January 15, and the free gifts will be available from that date until January 22.
Rare has added a host of content to Sea of Thieves since its launch, including pets such as parrots and monkeys, emotes, new voyages and quests, as well as The Arena – a competitive mode that pits rival crews against each other as they race to find bounties and treasure.
Neate wrote today that Rare has “big plans for the coming year”.
“For everyone at Rare, the Sea of Thieves community represents the very best of what gaming can be. It’s home to players from more than eighty different countries, bringing together gamers on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox One and Windows 10 PC and creating countless stories and moments that people can treasure. Seeing these stories shared through social media or other community spaces is something that inspires the team every day. To every person who’s played Sea of Thieves, thank you.”
